What Your Hair Says About Your Health

While many of us only focus on the aesthetic pleasure of having flowing shiny locks, the fact is that dull, limp strands, or hair loss, can sometimes indicate a health issue. Here are a few conditions to watch out for:

Hair loss and graying

woman with gray hairWhile thinning and graying hair can be a standard part of aging for both women and men, a recent study of 2,000 men in India showed that participants who had coronary artery disease were more likely to be prematurely bald or gray. The study, conducted by the European Society of Cardiology on men under 40, discovered that the 50 percent of participants with coronary artery disease were more likely to have gone prematurely gray, versus 30 percent of a healthy control group, the BBC reports. The participants in the heart condition group were also more likely (49 percent) to have male pattern baldness, compared with those in the healthy group (27 percent).

Metabolic or hormonal stress and certain medications can cause hair loss, especially if it is sudden. This condition is called Telogen effluvium, according to Medscape. In a majority of cases, new hair starts growing within six months, but longer durations of the condition also exist.

ARTAS® Hair Transplant Procedure Charlotte

Dr. Bruce Marko announced today that he will now offer the ARTAS® Hair Transplant Procedure Charlotte. This minimally invasive hair restoration solution leverages digital imaging and precision robotics for harvesting individual follicular units directly from the scalp. The ARTAS System enables hair restoration physicians to target and harvest healthy follicular units with micron level accuracy without leaving a linear scar.

“Offering the ARTAS® Hair Transplant Procedure Charlotte will be essential for my practice and for my patients who seek a permanent solution to hair loss without the scarring and downtime that comes with alternatives in the market. I’m extremely pleased with the results and excited to offer a robotic solution to hair restoration,” commented Dr. Marko.”

Hair restoration is performed as an office-based, out-patient procedures usually ranging from 4-8 hours depending on the amount of hair being transplanted. Implanted hairs develop their own blood supply, begin to grow and new hairs are seen a few months after the procedure. New hair continues to grow, making the change in the patient’s appearance gradually noticeable within six months.

“We are very pleased we can offer doctors and their patients the ARTAS® Hair Transplant Procedure Charlotte.  It is the most advanced hair transplant solution that is safe, minimally invasive and extremely effective,” said Jim McCollum, Chief Executive Officer, Restoration Robotics.
Hair Loss By The Numbers

Over 35 million men are affected by male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia) in the United States alone. Approximately two-thirds of American men will experience appreciable hair loss by age 35; by age 50, 85% will see significant loss in hair thickness. Genetic hair loss, which typically begins between late adolescence and before or during middle age, is largely untreatable outside of surgery.

Growing Popularity in Hair Restoration Thanks to More Non-Invasive Techniques

Charlotte Hair Restoration, a division of Advanced Hair Transplants, has seen an increase in the popularity of hair restoration procedures during the last few years.  Local increases in hair restoration seem to mirror a national increase that shows surgical hair restoration procedures jumping 11 percent in 2010 compared to results from an International Society of Hair Restoration Surgeons (ISHRS) practice census in 2008.

Dr. Bruce Marko, hair transplant surgeon and Medical Director of Charlotte Hair Restoration, attributes the increase in hair restoration procedures at his practice to the medical breakthroughs in the field that allow for more impressive results in a shorter period of time.  Dr. Marko notes the increased popularity of his advanced MAX DENSITY hair transplant procedure, giving you DOUBLE THE DENSITY in ONE PROCEDURE when compared to the typical ‘Pay-By-The-Graft’ hair transplant surgery.  Also popular is Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) which removes individual follicular units and leaves no linear scar.

.According to the 2011 ISHRS practice census, 86 percent of surgical hair restoration patients are male and 14 percent are female – a 24 percent increase since 2004.  The majority of patients fall between the ages of 30-49 years old.

Eyebrow transplants on the rise thanks to celebrity interest

Recently, Kelly Ripa shared on her morning show, Live with Kelly and Michael, the fact that for the past eight years she has been researching eyebrow transplantation. Due to years of over plucking, her eyebrows are not as full as she would desire and she’s interested in an eyebrow transplant.

Kelly Ripa isn’t the only one who has publicly expressed interest in eyebrow transplantation. Some celebrities have even admitted to having the procedure. These outspoken celebrities have caused a great increase in interest for eyebrow transplants.

In our office, female hair transplantation and eyebrow transplantation have increased dramatically.

Eyebrow transplantation is a very intricate procedure because the brow is a very sensitive and a relatively small area. For this reason, it’s important to consult with a surgeon that specializes in hair restoration surgery and has experience performing an eyebrow transplant.

The procedure for restoring eyebrows involves the individual placement of single hairs from the scalp in the natural growth pattern of the patients’ eyebrow hair. The meticulous placement of as many as several hundred hairs can restore eyebrows to their most natural appearance.

The need and desire for fuller eyebrows can be the result of genetics, over plucking, prior electrolysis, laser hair removal, medical abnormalities and trauma.

Hair transplantation has come a long way. I’ve been performing microscopic hair transplant surgery for over ten years and the tools and techniques available today allow for truly natural-looking results with less recovery time.

P.S. Yes, we did reach out and offer for Kelly Ripa to come see us for an eyebrow transplant. We’ll let you know if she takes us up on our offer.

Hair restoration surgery should ONLY be performed by a trained medical doctor

ISHRSLOGO-300x1831The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) recently reviewed advertisements and other marketing materials directed at dermatologists, plastic surgeons, cosmetic surgeons, family practitioners, gynecologists, otolaryngologists, and other physicians encouraging them to incorporate hair restoration surgery into their practice via a proposed “turnkey” technology. The ISHRS is concerned that the marketing materials jeopardize patient safety and place physicians at risk.

The marketing materials offer to sell automated devices which enables technicians to perform hair restoration surgery with minimal input from a physician.

Hair restoration surgery is a complex cosmetic procedure requiring attention to detail and proper long term treatment planning to ensure patient safety and achieve optimal results. While allowing non-physician personnel/technicians to perform hair restoration surgery may have economic benefits for a practice, doing so may jeopardize patient safety and create legal liability for physicians. In many if not all states, the harvesting of scalp tissue is considered surgery and/or the practice of medicine. In those jurisdictions, such action by non-physician personnel may constitute the unlicensed practice of medicine, potentially subjecting said personnel, the responsible physician(s), and the practice to civil and/or criminal liability. Furthermore, physicians utilizing non-physician personnel to perform procedures, who fail to notify their professional liability insurance carriers of the same, may jeopardize their coverage in the event of a claim.

If you are aware of similar marketing in your community, the ISHRS encourages that you report the activity to your state medical board. You may simply provide a copy of the subject marketing piece along with this Physician Practice Alert. Click to find contact information to assist you in this task. If you choose to state more information in your submission to your state medical board, you should consult with an attorney.

The issue is not the technology but the expertise of the individuals performing the surgery and the encouragement by device manufacturers for “turnkey” hair restoration solutions for physicians without proper training.

The ISHRS is a nonprofit corporation, exempt from federal income tax pursuant to Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3). The ISHRS seeks to advance the art and science of hair restoration by licensed, experienced physicians; educate and increase the level of knowledge of physicians and their assistants regarding hair restoration techniques, procedures, and related issues; encourage and facilitate the free interchange of ideas, knowledge, and experience among physicians and assistants providing hair restoration; and encourage professional excellence and patient safety in connection with hair restoration surgery.
